Alkyds and Oleoresinous dry by this manner, as the solvent evaporates, so the oxygen in the air begins to be absorbed into the film to react with the alkyd resin or oil, surface dry occurs first, followed over a longer period (usually overnight), by through drying when the oxygen uptake has penetrarted the complete layer. Additives in the form of driers are used to control and accelerate this process, the films will dry without driers, but the oxidation process would be unacceptably long.

Permobel, Transport Coach Finish, One Pac Polyurethane and Decorative gloss finishes fall into this category.
