• SUBJECT:                                                Refinish Procedure of Red Mica

                                                                             (Color Code No. 3H1)

This Service Bulletin briefly explains a new paint material, known as mica paint which has been used for the first time in the New Supra model, and some caution points when refinishing such paint.

    1. Mica saint

Instead of an aluminum pigment, mica paint contains a colored mica pigment which has titanium and iron oxide coated on the transparent mica flake.

Since aluminum pigment, which 18 used in ordinary metallic color paint, has a silver tint and is not transparent, it is impossible to create a color with a  high metallic tone having superior saturation.

On the other hand, since the colored mica pigment is semitransparent, it has an optical characteristic which reflects a portion of the light striking it at the surface and allows the rest to pass through. Due to this optical characteristic, mica paint represents very clear and transparent pearlescent metallic tone.

    Paint Film Construction

    Superior Points

         1. Very bright color with transparent depth

         2. High metallic pearlescent tone when under direct sun light.

         3. Having both a metallic and solid feeling

              - Under weaker light, it looks like a solid color, no metallic feeling

    2. Caution Point When Refinishing

Generally, the refinishing procedure of this paint is the same as that of ordinary metallic color paint. However, care should be taken in the following points:

    Vẽ hình trang 5/22

Two different directions of Influence and reflex on the sunlight.

1-3. The shade (Brightness or Pearlescent) greatly changes by the amounts of colored mica pigment mixed in the paint and the tint is also influenced. The amounts of the colored mica pigment should be precisely measured on a scale.

Note: Some paint manufacturers prepare the ready mixed paint to prevent this mixing difficulty.

1-4. Since the specific gravity of colored mica pigment is great, it easily sinks in the paint. This tendency is especially strong after mixing with a thinner. It is necessary to sufficiently agitate this paint.

1-5. Because of weak hiding power, the red mica color (3H1) cannot adequately hide the intermediate coat by one thick spray coat. It is necessary to spray several times in intervals from three to five minutes.

    - Reference –

    1. The paint material for refinishing Red Mica color is supplied through some of the major paint manufacturers. Also, you can obtain the following ready mixed paints through our Overseas Parts Department in the usual manner:

    2. Pearl Mica Paint

Recently, most paint manufacturers are also supplying a similar paint which contains the mica pigment. It is called as a Pearl Mica Paint.

Although great expertise is needed to properly spray this paint, it produces stunning brightness and has a variety of jewel-like colors.

Toyota will also introduce this paint in the future.

USE OF THE BUB CIRCLE FOR TINTING

Colours used for mixing are pure colours. That is they are ‘clean’ and will lie on the circumference of the hue circle.

If two colours which are close to each other on the circle, then the mixture will be very clean as it stays within the 'high chroma’ region.

If we mix red [Point A) with yellow (Point B) the colour will appear on the line (A*E), the colour will be proportional to the amount of red and yellow, but a 50:50 mixture will produce orange. The whole ranges of colours obtained are close to the edge of the circle.

If you mix two colours which are a long way apart around the circle, then the line joining them gets nearer the center of the circle, the nearer the colour gets to grey, in other words, the dirtier the colour will be.

If we mix red (Point A) with green (Point C) in equal proportions, we get a  dirty olive-brown, red and turquoise give grey.
